Mooiplaas woman arrested for possession of a stolen firearm

The firearm was loaded with seven live bullets.

A 20-year-old woman from Mletsane section in Mooiplaas will appear in the Eerstehoek Magistrate’s Court today for the alleged possession of a firearm reportedly stolen in Pretoria 21 years ago.
She faces a charge of possession of a firearm without a licence.

The suspect spent the weekend in the police holding cells after she was arrested following a tip-off last Friday.

According to Sgt Peace Mbokane, the firearm was loaded with seven live bullets. “The 7.65 mm firearm with seven live ammunition had its serial number on the barrel completely filed off. The police employed tactics to find the number and further discovered that it was reportedly stolen in Pretoria (Soshanguve) in 1998,” he said.

When police asked her how she obtained the firearm, the suspect told police that on March 9 she and her friends were offered a lift from a liquor outlet by an unknown man, allegedly from Emalahleni who was proposing his love for her.

“Apparently, when the aforesaid man dropped them at their residence, his firearm fell on the ground and she only saw it on the next day,” said Mbokane. He added that the owner did not come to collect the firearm, even after attempts were allegedly made by the suspect to contact him.
“Meanwhile, the police are continuing to investigate all the details in relation to the firearm and additional arrests are possible,” said Mbokane.
