SABC employee suspected of theft

A South African Broadcasting Corporation employee resigned with immediate effect at the regional office after allegations of theft.

The individual is alleged to have stolen an undisclosed amount of money from the company’s petty cash. According to reliable sources, the employee at the finance department has been helping herself to the broadcaster’s money. It is alleged that she disclosed to a colleague that she stole R3 000 from the petty cash before she went
on leave.

On December 31 the company calculated the cash, only to discover that there was a shortfall of R12 298. A petty cash certificate that was issued on the same date and seen by Mpumalanga News confirmed the shortfall.

The document stated that the matter would be investigated once the employee returned to work from leave on January 17.

“An email was sent by the finance manager to the person who was issuing petty cash. It read that the cash was counted, but there was a difference in outstanding cash. The manager wanted to know what happened to the cash. She never responded to the email that was sent by the finance manager. She came back to drop the keys off
and left for leave.

“Every month a petty cash certificate is issued. However, the latest one indicated that the matter will be investigated when the employee returns to work. She came back and carried on with her duties as if nothing happened. How does one steal from the company when already it has financial problems. It can’t be accepted. Policies of this company are not being followed because there should be disciplinary action taken against the employee,” the sources said.

A media inquiry was sent to SABC headquarters. Media relations manager, Mr Vuyo Mthembu said the matter
was receiving the necessary attention and he would report back to the publication.
