Bikers to flood Mbombela this weekend
MEC Pat Ngomane of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison urged bikers to obey the traffic rules and use the roads safely
Road users are urged to be cautions of thousands of motorcyclists on the roads of the City of Mbombela this weekend.
More than 5 000 bikers from more than over 35 clubs countrywide and neighbouring countries will flock to Mbombela Stadium for the third annual Sunriders MCC Rally.
“This is one of our big events we host annually to have fun and give back to the community. This time we will donate about 50 blankets to needy families at Matsafeni which is near the stadium,” explained Palesa Mokoena treasurer of the club.
“I mastered riding motorcycles, I guess my passion continued from then,” she said. She joined the Sunriders MCC in 2009. She prides herself for being the first woman in the club to ride a superbike.
Sunriders deputy president, Nolwazi Mamo, said this year’s event will be much bigger and better compared to previous events. “We expect bikers from the whole SADAC region to take part in this rally. This will surely boost the economy of our province. We expect more than R22 million returns to the City of Mbombela with this rally,” she said.
“We also have campsites at Mbombela Stadium to allow bikers who might need rest during the rally to do,” she said.
She added that on Saturday the bikers will ride from the stadium to Barberton and back to Mbombela at 12:00 as a way of showcasing the beautiful scenery of the province to the visiting bikers.

Ngomane urged them not to drink and drive, speed excessively or pull dangerous stunts on public roads. He had instead pleaded with the biking community to be ambassadors of road safety. He added that with bikers’ cooperation needless injury and death resulting from road crashes will be avoided.
” While we cannot overlook the economic spin offs that come with such gatherings, we should not tolerate unsafe road usage. It is in this context that our capable law enforcers will be visible throughout the municipality to ensure that law and order prevail and to deal with any errant behaviour on the road,” Ngomane concluded.
