Sello ‘Chicco’ Thwala threatens to stop Brenda Fassie’s biopic

As part of stopping the biopic the producer has allegedly gone as far as instructing his publisher not to grant the movie’s production partners permission to use any of the songs he wrote and produced for Brenda.

Brenda Fassie’s former producer Sello Chicco Thwala is threatening to stop the release of Brenda: The True Story.

Thwala says he has all the rights to Brenda’s music and is taking legal action to stop the film.

A London-based film and television production company called Showbizbee recently announced that they will be producing the movie in conjunction with the Brenda Fassie Estate and Legaci Nova.

Showbizbeeuk responded on twitter by saying “Trying to stop the Brenda Fassie movie is like trying to sit on the Sun in the Morning to stop it rising, it’s not going to stop”.

The pop diva died in 2004 after spending two weeks in a coma.

It is alleged that her death was caused by a cocaine overdose.

The script is based on a story told by Bongani Fassie and the film will detail the Black Madonna’s rise to stardom.

It will begin in the Langa township of Cape Town where Brenda was born and follow her journey to Johannesburg where she would become a household name.

It is reported that Thwala’s attorneys has sent a letter Legaci Nova, which says an agreement was entered into between Thwala, Fassie Records and Fassie’s estate.

The said agreements states that, Thwala was granted commercial exploitation rights on the feature film of Brenda Fassie, respectively holds 90% of

Fassie records and 82% shareholding in Estate Late Brenda Fassie, with Bongani Fassie and Estate Late Brenda Fassie holding 10% and 18%, respectively.

Meanwhile the auditions are opened; everything is still going according to plans and the closing date February 11 2018.
