SASSA warns grant beneficiaries of card renewal scams

It is alleged that once the scammers get the card and pin, they disappear without a trace.

MBOMBELA – South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) warned cardholders against card renewal scammers.
It is alleged that there are reports stating that pensioners need to renew their cards before they reach an expiring date which is the end of December 2017.

The provincial spokesperson of SASSA, Mr Senzeni Ngubeni said since last month a number of people visited their offices and added that pensioners must not heed to this call. “It’s not true that we are calling pensioners to renew their cards. As an agency, we see the reports in the media. We suspect that there are scammers who are taking advantage of vulnerable people or pensioners. They want to steal their money. We are living in a cruel society where people can do whatever they can to make money,” said Ngubeni.

It is alleged that there are women who target old age centres and visit pensioners at home requesting their SASSA cards and pin number so that they can renew the card.
The stern warning comes after five pensioners from a local old age centre in Barberton recently fell victims of a scam.
