Police arrest 100 protesters at Embalenhle

Municipal offices, trucks and Somalian shops were burnt down during the on-going service delivery protest at Embalehle.

More than 100 protesters have been detained following a service delivery protest at Embalenhle, Secunda.

The protest action started on Sunday morning apparently over the Eskom bulk power interruptions due to the municipal debt to Eskom.

Capt Albertina Zondo spokesperson of Embalenhle police says angry residents burnt all municipal offices at the previous municipality and  at extension 8, 14 and 17.

“Three waste removal trucks had also been burnt plus three shops belonging to Somalian nationals at Extention 17.

The situation is still tense and police are busy monitoring the situation. The detained persons are still to be charged,” she added.

Residents posted in their Facebook accounts about a meeting held at Embalehle yesterday, Sunday morning where issues of service delivery were raised.

A majority of the residents complained about their electrical appliances being damaged due to the power cuts.

“The group left the stadium in frenzy and started blocking roads and burning tyres.

The group want to involve all sectors and requested the taxi association to join to create a total shut down of transport,” posted Mariet Naude on Facebook.
