ANC ward Councillor in court facing attempted murder charges

DRIEKOPPIES – The ANC ward councillor who shot and wounded a learner during a protest, has been charged for attempted murder and will be appearing in court today.

He was arrested after he shot and wounded a 16-year-old learner on Friday during a community protest in Middleplaas.

Brigadier Leonard Hlathi confirmed that the ANC Councillor will be appearing before the Boschfontein Regional Court today facing charges of attempted murder.

In the meantime, there is still continuing unrest at Middleplaas as community members are still waiting for their grievances to be addressed. On Thursday August 24, there was a protest action over the bad conditions of Mpumelelo Primary School.

Community members closed all roads leading to Mpumelelo Primary School, they burnt tyres in front of the school gate, demanding that proper ablution facilities be built for the learners and other school infrastructure upgraded.

On Monday, August 27, learners were still roaming the streets as the protests continued, community members blocked the entrance to Mpumelelo Primary School with burning tyres. They also blocked Camalaza Secondary School and the local clinic. The clinic has been opened this morning, but the two schools are still closed.
