Truck driver arrested for causing horrific accident in Machadodorp

The police arrested the driver after his statement contradicted that of eye-witnesses accounts and the evidence found at the scene.

MBOMBELA – The driver of the truck involved in the tragic accident that claimed 18 lives on the R541 Badplaas and Machadodorp road, has been arrested.

The Mozambican national, Mr Sebastian Macuacua appeared before the Machadodorp Magistrate’s Court on June 5 on charges of culpable homicide.

He was remanded in custody. He will appear again in court on July 10.

The provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) said the truck was on the wrong side of the road when the head-on collision with a taxi occurred.

Sixteen people died on the scene and two others were declared dead at Belfast Hospital following the accident involving two taxis carrying contract workers employed by Franki Africa to Nkomati Mine on July 4.

It is alleged that the Quantum minibus went right under the truck and the Mercedes minibus which was following, went into the back of the Quantum.

Their memorial service of the deceased is taking place at Machadodorp today.
