Prisoner to appear in a disciplinary hearing for possession of dagga

An inmate is expected to appear in a disciplinary hearing after he was found with 5kg of dagga in a cell

BARBERTON – Smuggling contraband in cells is a problem in correctional facilities.
In order to ensure that the facilities are safe and secure, authorities introduced a routine raid which is yielding fruitful results.

Those who are found on the wrong side of the law, the authorities have taken disciplinary measures.Recently a 21-year old offender who appeared at the local magistrate’s court for possession of dagga, is expected to appear for a disciplinary hearing at the correctional service.
Sizwe Modlane was found with 5kg of dagga in his cell during a raid. It is alleged that he was doing illegal business of selling dagga in cells to other offenders.
The spokesperson, Messiah Hlongwane confirmed that the department has taken measures on this matter as they also charged Mondlane with possession of dagga.

 

“We have also charged him with possession of dagga. He is expected to appear for an internal hearing so that we can also get our findings. I think if we find him guilty, we are not going to hesitate to down-grade him, meaning that he will go back to maximum prison,” he explained.


Some of the contraband that were previously discovered included 19 cell phones, 15 cell phone chargers, 15 earphones, 13 sim cards and 7 sharp objects, 2 bankcards, dagga and R497.60 during the impromptu raid.
