Days of illegal occupation of RDP houses are numbered

RDP houses are not spaza shops

MBOMBELA – Days of illegal occupants of RDP houses are numbered as the department of human settlement is investigating the matter with the intention to getting to the bottom of who is behind the illegal allocation of the units.

The MEC of the department, Mr Speedy Mashilo said that yesterday when he was delivering the policy and budget speech at the legislature.”We are also faced with a problem of illegal occupation of RDP houses by non-beneficiaries,” said Mashilo.

This newspaper also learnt that some of the areas where people allegedly occupied the houses illegally is at Thekwane South.

Not so long ago during the oral reply of questions, Mashilo lashed out at greedy beneficiaries who are using the houses as a tool to make money by renting out the houses as “Spaza” shops to foreign nationals in townships.

“The houses are not spaza shops, the aim of the government is to provide housing to ensure that all citizens have decent shelter, but what we are experiencing these days is a disgrace. If beneficiaries no longer need them, they must bring them back to government, end of story,” said Mashilo.
