BARBERTON – Mpumalanga News learned that the inmate was injured when he was overpowered by other prisoners.
Spokesperson for the facility, Mr Mesia Hlongwane, refuted the report that the inmate overpowered a prison warder and took his pistol.

“It was a toy gun, but we are going to investigate how he managed to get one inside the cell because such things and weapons are not allowed. We condemn the offender’s behaviour.”

Hlongwane added that the prisoner sustained minor injuries to the head and was rushed to Barberton General Hospital for a doctor’s assessment.
“He is back in his cell and an investigation is under way,” he concluded.
