Four municipal employees arrested for fraud

Four municipal workers were arrested for charges of fraud and money laundering worth R1,6 million.

EMALAHLENI – The suspects a 49-year-old member of the mayoral committee, Mr Johannes Setekudi Matshipa and his co-accused, a 39-year-old year-old former ward councillor, Mr Johannes Mbuswana Mdluli, a member of a local Cooperative 39-year-old, Ms Joyce Ntombi Sibuyi and the municipality’s former speaker, Mr Diesel Augustine Mkhwanazi (59) appeared before the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on February 16.

This comes after their arrest on February 15 during an operation conducted by members of the Hawks, Middelburg Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, Serious Corruption Investigation, SANEB and the Financial Asset Forfeiture Investigative Unit (FAFI).

It is alleged that in 2013 the suspects embezzled money from a local farmer’s cooperative where they illegally took money for their own benefit.
They were each granted R5 000 bail on condition that they don’t interfere with members of the municipality’s management. The matter was postponed to April 21 for trial.
