Over 200 000 NSFAS students approved

It is confirmed that 291 747 students in universities and TVET colleges around South Africa who applied for National Student Financial Scheme (NSFAS) have been approved for the academic year 2017.

MBOMBELA – This statement was made in Parliament on Wednesday when briefing the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training.

NSFAS Board chairperson, Sizwe Nxasana said that the record for the scheme is expected to increase before February 17, 2017 which is the closing date for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college applications. A majority of these students are already registered in universities.

Nxasana also added that more than 180 944 of these students are at universities, while 110 803 are TVET college students.
“Overall, 9 976 applications were unsuccessful due to financial ineligibility, as they were categorized within the missing-middle category. However, these students may appeal the decision” said Nxasana.

Many students were facing communications problems, even so, the NSFAS management also addressed their apologies to students. ”The delays were caused by some of the challenges which include changes in last year’s academic calendar at some of the institutions and a significant number of applications that had missing documents,” said Nxasana.
