Inconsiderate taxi drivers frustrate motorists

Local motorists have vented their anger against taxi operators who have allegedly turned the hikers' spot to a taxi rank.

BARBERTON – They allege that the taxis drive negligently, make u-turns at any moment, causing a traffic jam, thus endangering the lives of other motorists on that main road. It has been reported that the taxis started using the spot on Friday.

Motorist, Ms Fikile Sibiya has called on the City of Mbombela Municipality to take serious action and address this matter. “They are causing unnecessary traffic jams by making u-turns in the middle of the road. They might take it very lightly, but such actions can cause accidents. They ignore you when you try to reprimand them.”

Another motorist, Mr Jabulani Makhumba said: “This has been an ongoing thing since December. I wonder why is traffic department not attending to this matter.”

The chairperson of the Barberton Taxi Association, Mr Michael Sithole refuted the allegations. “We are not using the hiking spot as our taxi rank. Our taxis are there to monitor Top Star Taxi Association taxis as some of their taxis are operating in Barberton illegally,”said Sithole.
