Rescue member drowns saving lives

The member was washed away while trying to save the woman and the driver whose taxi was washed away by the strong floods.

KWAGGAFONTEIN – A 31-year-old fire and rescue member tragically lost his life while trying to save a 26-year-old woman and a taxi driver from drowning on Saturday morning.

According to police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi, the member was washed away while trying to save the woman and the driver whose taxi was washed away by the strong floods while they were trying to cross to the other side of the river.

The member managed to rescue the taxi driver and was swept away while trying to save the passenger.

“Unfortunately, he was also washed away by the floods immediately after he had managed to save the taxi driver,” he said.
Hlathi urged community members not to cross flooded rivers to avoid drowning.
