Three arrested for attempted ATM bombing

Their arrest comes after police received information about a planned bombing of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) within the area.

TONGA- An intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of three men and seizure of explosive devices at KaMhlushwa, near Tonga.

The suspects aged between 38 and 46 are faced with charges with possession of explosive devices. They all appeared in the Tonga Magistrate Court yesterday.

“They were remanded in custody and would appear for their formal bail application on November 2,” says Capt Mzwandile Nyambi. Two of the suspects are said to be from Gauteng province and one being a local.

Their arrest comes after police received information about a planned bombing of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) within the area.

Members of the Public Order Police (POP), who have been deployed around the area for unrest-related duties, kept a watchful eye while patrolling the area. At around 02:30, they spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the one they have been alerted of and stopped it.

• G4S security vehicle robbed off an undisclosed cash

One suspect immediately jumped off and fled to nearby houses, some of the members gave chase but to no avail as he quickly disappeared in between the houses. It is believed that the suspect who escaped was in possession, an AK 47 rifle and two pistols.
