The country has recently experienced an influx of Hollywood starts visiting the country for work. A number of films were made in Cape Town and Johannesburg, but our province has proven to be a movie-making hub too.
Hollywood directors are completely taken by our breath-taking scenery. Here are some of the movies that were made in Mpumalanga:
Blood Diamond
This 2006 German-American political war thriller was co-produced and directed by Edward Zwick, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou.
The title refers to diamonds that are mined in war zones and sold to finance these conflicts and thereby profit warlords and diamond companies across the world.
The film features stars such as Michael Sheen and Arnold Vosloo. Some parts of the movie were shot in Malalane. It snatched up five Oscar nominations, seven awards and gross of $171 407 179.

Catch a Fire
The film begins in “Northern Coalfields, South Africa, 1980”. It revolves around Patrick Chamusso, a young, political man (played by Derek Luke) who is accused of carrying out an attack against the government, and an Afrikaner police officer, Nic Vos, played by Tim Robbins. Vos is in charge of locating the perpetrators of a recent bomb attack against the Secunda CTL synthetic fuel refinery, which is the largest coal liquefaction plant in the world.
Patrick is unwillingly swept into Vos’s investigation due to his inability to provide a satisfactory explanation for his whereabouts at the time of the bombing (he was in fact having an affair).
Eventually Patrick, his wife, Precious, (played by Bonnie Henna), and his family are tortured and savagely abused by Vos and his subordinates.

Desperate, Patrick says he is willing to confess to a crime he did not commit to protect his family from torture. At last, Vos concludes that he is innocent and orders his release. As gripping as the story may be, you can not help but notice where it was filmed.
