Patients hurt by staff’s attitude

Mathenjwa says she was left speechless when a staff member told her that there were no nurses to go with them to Steve Biko on a date arranged to transfer her daughter there.

MBOMBELA – A young couple was recently hurt by the negative attitude they allegedly received from the staff of Rob Ferreira Hospital.

Ms Thembi Mathenjwa and her husband, Mr Moses Lubisi said they had been moved from pillar to post when their bedridden 30-month-old daughter was to be transferred to Steve Biko hospital for an operation.

Mathenjwa says she was left speechless when a staff member told her that there were no nurses to go with them to Steve Biko on a date arranged to transfer her daughter there.

“She told me there were no nurses to go with us, as nurses were attending some courses,” she said with tears rolling down her cheeks.

The attitude of the staff members hurts us as a family. We don’t know what to do anymore. The child was born with a cerebrum problem, she can’t do anything on her own. She lately suffered from breathing problems and a tube was inserted in her twice by the hospital hence this arrangement to take her to Steve Biko for another operation,” she said.

They said if they they had money they would have taken their child to a private hospital but they cannot afford private doctors for the operation which is estimated to cost around R23 000.
Dumisani Malamule, spokesperson for the Department of Health, said investigations on what happened on the day in question will be conducted.
