WITBANK – Three emergency officials and a patient narrowly escaped death when the ambulance they were travelling in was involved in a horrific accident on the R555 road yesterday.
It is alleged that the accident occurred when a VW Polo vehicle had a tyre bust which caused it to capsize to the oncoming traffic, colliding head on with the Emergency Medical Service vehicle.
The three officials including two emergency officials and a nurse were rushed to Mid-Med hospital.
“One ambulance personnel was treated of minor injuries and discharged while the other personnel and the nurse are still in hospital undergoing treatment.
The patient did not sustained any injuries from the accident. He was admitted in Witbank hospital,” explained Dumisani Malamule spokesperson for the department of health.
The ambulance was damaged beyond repairs and thus will be written off.
The MEC for Health, Mr. Gillion Mashego has expressed his shock about the accident. “I would like to wish the injured officials a speedy recovery. Road users must always ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they follow the rules of the road all the time” said Mashego.
