Suspect released on warning for possession of elephant tusks and leopard skin

The suspect was found in possession of the four elephant tusks weighing about 14 kg and worth a street value of R14 000 plus the leopard skin worth R40 000

MBOMBELA – A 38 year-old man who was arrested after he was found in possession of four elephants tusks and a leopard skin was released on warning by the Nelspruit Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Mr Anton Smit was arrested by members of the Hawks Organised Serious Crime Unit on endangered species with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency on April 29.

According Hawks spokesperson, Lt Dineo Sekgotodi the suspect was found in possession of the four elephant tusks weighing about 14 kg and worth a street value of R14 000 plus the leopard skin worth R40 000. “He was found around town and failed to produce the permits,” she said.

The matter was postponed for further investigations to May 6.
