Programme educates citizens on voting

It is aimed at educating the public about their role in a democratic country and the importance of taking responsibility in the establishment of their local government.

MBOMBELA – In an attempt to urge people to register in preparation for the coming elections, the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature embarked on the Voter Education Programme from April 5 to 8.

“It is aimed at educating the public about their role in a democratic country and the importance of taking responsibility in the establishment of their local government,” explained Zamagambu Memela-Gamede, communications head in the legislature.

“It is further aimed at counteracting public ignorance related to service delivery.
This is also one way of fulfilling one of the legislature’s key mandates of public participation through its public participation and petitions sections,” says Memela-Gamede.
The programme targets all eligible voters including senior citizens, young people and first-time voters.

The legislature also emphasised the importance of taking advantage of the open voter-education weekend on April 9 and 10.
Citizens are urged to visit their nearest voter registration centres to register and check if their particulars appear on the voter’s roll, as it is the constitutional duty of every citizen to be involved in establishing a democratic government.
