Obey road rules and arrive alive

As the busy Easter period approaches and traffic volume is about to be at its pick, the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa has cautioned all road users to be considerate on the road.

MBOMBELA – As the busy Easter period approaches and traffic volume is about to be at its pick, the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa has cautioned all road users to be considerate on the road.

“We will not have mercy on those road users who will not obey the rules of the road” warned Nhlengethwa.

According to Nhlengethwa, during this period, the department will intensify its law enforcement operations as Public Transport Inspectors will be deployed all over the province’s critical routes.

This, she said, will be done in partnership with various stakeholders including amongst others the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

Over and above the mandatory operating licences required in terms of the National Land Transport Act (NLTA), all
public transport operators who will be ferrying commuters to churches and any other area of interest are urged to apply for Special Operating Licence for that particular route.

“Operators must comply with all the rules of the road, ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy and avoid overloading and speeding at all costs.

It is equally important that the driver is fit to be on the road and rests every two hours or 200 km of their journey to combat fatigue since it is one of the causes of road accidents,”added the MEC.
