Team Mpumalanga aims for Gold

In celebration of Heritage Month, teams from the nine provinces will battle against each other in the National Indigenous Games in Limpopo this weekend.

During this current Heritage Month, indigenous games have played an important role in the promotion of unity and social cohesion as Team Mpumalanga get ready to take on other greats from eight provinces during the Indigenous Games Festival in their finals over this coming weekend in Limpopo.

Mpumalanga excels in morabaraba, jukskei, kgati and khokho, but the best to compete in the national competition in all codes were selected in August at WH de Klerk Special School, eMalahleni. The game codes are diketo (coordination game), dibeke (running game), khokho (running game), morabaraba (board game), incuva (board game), jukskei (target game), kgati (rope jumping), intonga (stick fighting) and drie stokkies.

The National Indigenous Games will be hosted from September 19 to 24 in Polokwane, Limpopo. The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation has prepared and structured its squad for all codes of the games with its aim of promoting cultural.

MEC for sport and recreation, Norah Mahlangu-Mabena wishes the Mpumalanga team going for the National Indigenous Tournament good luck. “Our team will be against other nine provinces fighting for the best at the national tournament. As the province we have faith in the men and women selected to represent the province to bring back a bagful of medals,” says Mahlangu-Mabena.

She added team Mpumalanga are stronger contenders for gold medals in intonga and kgathi. “Win or lose, the whole province is behind the team,” said Mahlangu-Mabena.
