New born baby survives four days in toilet pit

In a similar incident which took place at KwaMhlanga on August 21, a 27 years old woman Dorah Kgomo, was arrested after she threw her five months old baby girl in a toilet pit and unfortunately the baby succumbed to the ordeal.

Vaalbank – A 29-year-old mother of three, Annah Bapela, has appeared before the Mbibane Magistrate Court for Concealment of birth. 

It is alleged that on Saturday,December20,Bapela gave birth to her baby boy while she visited her boyfriend. 

She then woke up late in the evening and concealed the baby in a toilet pit.

After the incident, she went back to sleep and pretend as if nothing happened.

On Sunday,the father of the baby noticed a blanket in a bucket left abandoned behind the toilet pit and he contacted Bapela’s cousin.

Bapela confided to her cousin that she concealed her child immediately after birth due to the fact that she had other three children to look after.

“Without any hesitation, the cousin alerted the police and necessary arrangements were made wherein the baby was retrieved from the pit alive and hospitalised at Mmametlhake hospital.”

According to reports,the baby is recuperating very well.

Bapela was arrested and charged hence her appearance before the court and her case was postponed to January 6 for legal aid representation and currently she has been granted R 1 000.00  bail.

It is alleged that Kgomo told her family members and the police that her child was turning into a python every time when they were alone.   

She further made horrific allegations that unknown spirits were whispering to her to take the baby into the water where she comes from hence she threw her in the pit.

Kgomo was charged with murder she appeared before the KwaMhlanga Magistrate Court facing a charge of murder. 

The court has instructed that Kgomo should be referred to a mental institution for observation.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Major General (Adv) Meshack Nogwanya, has called the two incidents as barbaric and should be condemned drastically. 

“The government provides for those who cannot make ends meet socially therefore, it is uncalled for what these two women are alleged to have done. It is worse to mention that one of the innocent souls lost her life as a result of the unpalatable conduct of her mother. 

We call on the public to seek professional help from government institutions so that we can prevent and put to an abrupt end the ill-acts of throwing babies into the toilets or even laterally killing them.” said Major General Nogwanya.
