High schools develop stars of tomorrow

Players of Khaliphani left many spectators speechless after they defeated Thembeka 35-20.

The Mbombela Basketball Tournament started last week when three local high schools showcased their talent.
Mpumalanga News learnt that ZB Kunene, Thembeka and Khaliphani secondary schools opened the tournament.
Players of Khaliphani left many spectators speechless after they defeated Thembeka 35-20. Speaking to this publication, Muzi Ncongwane, who is the national team coach, said hosting such a tournament was a huge achievement since this was an unfamiliar sport in the local communities.
“It’s the first of its kind. We also have a primary schools’ tournament as we have started focusing on basketball development,” he said.
According to Ncongwane, although most of the people are not used to basketball, young people have started to show an interest.

“It’s overwhelming to see this. It’s not about having fun, there’s more to basketball. We also teach them about discipline and morals. Sport plays a very significant role when it comes to keeping young people busy so that they don’t get involved in criminal activities. You can take up this sport as a career,” he concluded.
