The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall intern Teboho Mashao publishes his first master’s dissertation article

The significance of Mashao's research is that the exchange rate's function in the local economy cannot be overstated.

Teboho Mashao, an academic support coordinator intern at IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall, has always been interested in economics and has devoted himself to studying more about economic analysis.

“Economics has always piqued my interest as a social science that deals with current events. Growing up, I was curious about how the world works and how its many components fit together. As a result, economics has assisted me in better understanding that,” said Mashao.

As a registered PhD student at North-West University, Mashao’s PhD is in economics, with his dissertation titled Investigating the Effects of Stabilisation Policy on the General Price Level in the Southern African Common Monetary Area.

Mashao received his Masters in Economics (Cum Laude) from North-West University and has published his first article from his master’s dissertation, titled, An Investigation of the Impact of the Exchange Rate Movements on Consumer Prices in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).

The significance of Mashao’s research is that the exchange rate’s function in the local economy cannot be overstated.

The exchange rate is crucial in an open economy and international trade.

However, there are differing views on the impact of exchange rate swings on domestic pricing.

As a result, policymakers and the economies of SACU members must have a thorough knowledge of the relationship between changes in exchange rates and changes in consumer prices.

Mashao is a young scholar who has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of economics.

As an up-and-coming economist, he will make an invaluable contribution to the field of economics.

“I also obtained my Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Economics from the University of Johannesburg and my Bachelor of Commerce in Economics from the University of Venda,” he explained.

Moreover, his Waterfall College internship’s major goal is to develop a candidate who is interested in pursuing a career in academia and to strengthen the IIE’s equity profile.

Participating in a structured development plan aimed at boosting Mashao’s aims and skills as a researcher and lecturer, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and administrative activities are among his obligations.
