Local young producer has over 3 000 unreleased songs

Although he has several hit songs such as Im Back featuring Kvse and Ayeye featuring Poly2thed, he still feels that Running of the Bulls which features Maglera, and 25k is his best work so far.

Music producers play a critical role in the musical entertainment industry.

They oversee the entire music-making process and without them, quality recordings would not be made.

Up and coming producer Mekaeel Haffaje, also known as Yourboy_mekaeel, has worked with the likes of Maglera Doe Boy, Scumie, 25K and Ruffkid to name a few.

The 18-year-old Carlswald resident fell in love with the music industry when he was in Grade 9. He would freestyle with his classmates at break time and his ‘bars’ would later be the foundation of his producing career. “One day, one of my friends came to me with an app called FL Studio. Because I was insecure about my rapping. I stopped rapping and started making beats on my mobile app. After a while, I switched to FL Studio,” he explained.

He produces a variety of music genres, including trap, hip-hop and Afro. “I am a producer of every genre. I am still new to the game with two years of production experience and I have over 3 000 unreleased songs in that span of time.”

Mekaeel shared that not many successful producers receive enough credit for their hard work. “The producer I define as a successful producer is Metro Booming because he has many big hits. That is why I also spend most of my time producing and making beats. I want to be the best.

“I get more streams than most rappers but I still don’t get recognition. The South African music industry of the old rappers and producers and our up-and-coming talented youngsters do not get the chance.”

He has several hit songs, such as I’m Back featuring Kvse and Ayeye featuring Poly2thed but feels that Running of the Bulls which features Maglera, and 25k is his best work so far. “I spoke to Maglera Doe boy before he blew up and told him we had to make something crazy [a song] and I was not lying as I sent him my stuff and he liked it and the song was out with his Diaspora album.”

While Amapiano is currently dominating the SA music industry, Mekaeel does not produce this genre. However, he still feels no threat as he believes in his craft. “Amapiano is growing and it shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. Trap and hip-hop on the other hand haven’t been doing much recently but hopefully, that can change this year,” he concluded.
