Local beauty wants to be the queen of models

Sanele Khuzwayo has bagged a variety of modelling titles in the past few years including the first princess for Miss Pretoria West 2021, Miss Elite Kings and Queens 2022, and Miss Passionate Gauteng 2022, but the queen accolade remains missing from her cabinet.

Local model Sanele Khuzwayo defines models as more than just ‘some human hangers for stylish clothes’.

The 22-year-old local believes youths look to models for fashion ideas. “Fashion would never have been interesting if clothes were only in stores folded on a rack. We are a society that spends a lot of money on beauty and looks presentable,” she said.

Local model Sanele Khuzwayo (22) aims for the queen’s crown.

“I have always wished and prayed to win a crown but have never succeeded and it makes me feel inadequate. I think it is due to my answers to the questions we get asked but I believe I have sharpened my mind now.”
Khuzwayo said modelling still had profound negative effects on society despite being one of the most glamorous and lucrative professions in the world. The University of South Africa final-year public relation student explained that the younger generation was obsessed with unrealistic beauty standards and body measurements.

“Models maintain a nutritious diet but people who are blindly following them [starve] themselves to fit in. Low self-esteem and a generation of people not accepting themselves are some of the hazardous effects of the modelling profession on society.”

She had faced some obstacles throughout her journey as a model but managed to overcome them. “The biggest obstacle I have faced in my modelling career was when my skin had pimples which made me lose one of the most important traits in the industry which is confidence.”
This year, Khuzwayo aims to win the Face of Devotion and be the face of the local soccer tournament, Miss Philly’s Games.
“I decided to be a model because I wanted to challenge myself for bigger opportunities but most importantly to give back to my community and be a role model to the next generation.”
