Top 10 used cars South Africans are likely to buy

This fact has emerged from the 2022 AutoTrader Mid-Year Car Industry Report. One of the many statistics contained within this insightful document is enquiry data; this is a definitive indicator of the cars that consumers are most likely to buy.

According to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie this is further confirmation of the bakkie’s immense desirability in South Africa.

“South Africans love bakkies. This is confirmed year after year when the Toyota Hilux is the top-selling new vehicle in South Africa. Last year, it took first place in the new vehicle stakes once again, with 36 085 sales. And it garners high interest in the used car market too, as our data shows,” he points out.

The Hilux was first introduced to the South African market in 1969. Toyota – which is also the most enquired on brand (15.9% of enquiries) – is now selling its eighth generation of this bakkie.

The average listed price of a Toyota Hilux on AutoTrader is R454 262, the average mileage is 96 167km and the average year of registration is 2018.

The next car South Africans are most interested in is the Volkswagen Polo, which generated the second most enquiries with a 4.9% share, and was also the single most listed used model in 2022 (average selling price of R278 285, average mileage of 55 415km and average year of registration of 2019). It is also the fourth most sold new car, clocking 18 235 sales last year.

The third-ranked model, namely the Ford Ranger, generated a 3.7% share of all enquiries. The average price of a used Ford Ranger is R413 009, the average mileage is 100 122km, and the average year of registration is 2017.
Rounding off the top ten used cars South Africans are likely to buy are the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo Vivo, Toyota Fortuner, BMW 1 Series and Ford Fiesta.
