Acting roles help Diepsloot-based actor sharpens his craft

The local actor has learnt a lot about the film industry from the productions he has been part of.

South African actor and community activist, Joseph Mvelase has described his journey as an actor as a rewarding challenge.

Mthembu, who hails from Diepsloot, currently plays the role of Jigga on e-TV telenovela, Isiphindiselo which shows on Sundays at 20:00.

“Portraying the role of Jigga in Isiphindiselo was something I’ve always longed for. Being part of a cast made of legends such as Israel Motseke Zulu was a great highlight for me. Playing the role of a prisoner was not an easy thing but being among the captains of the industry helped me find it easy to adapt to the role.”

Mthembu said he was also part of other two telenovelas, Gomora and DiepCity, on DSTV channel Mzansi Magic.

“In Gomora, I portrayed the role of Mashinini that really took me [out of] my comfort zone. Mashinini portrays a Sangoma that tricks customers who come for a consultation just to make money for his daily living. I also play the role of Razor in DiepCity.”

He said being part of these productions has taught him a number of good lessons about film industry.

“Getting roles in different productions is quite a good thing for me because it exposed me to challenges that I have to overcome. I enjoy the roles that I’m playing and work hard every day to give viewers the best product.”
