Given Zulu fuses old with new on his new love song

MIDRAND – Given Zulu said that the track was a lead to his upcoming album' Premium African Music Volume 1' dropping next year.

Midrand-based artist Given Zulu recently released his new song Ngibonani, What am I seeing, in which he sings about the feeling of meeting the love of his life for the first time.

The producer, composer, and sound engineer features Kid X and Professor on the track and fuses South Africa’s past sounds into a modernised afro-fusion. He said his inspiration came from artists such as Mafikizolo, Afro-jazz singer Oliver Mutukudzi and Hugh Masekela.

“My approach of vocals is umbhaqanga or rather schathamiya, songs of a war cry in terms of the texture of approach and melody. I was trying to create a modernised typical South African love song,” he added.

“The song is basically about love at first sight, of which getting the features on the song, Kid X and Professor, was something that happened organically.”
Zulu said the song was produced by him with the help of his close friends, one who is a drummer and the other a guitarist. “Luckily while busy with my song, I was busy recording Kid X’s song. He was at my place recording and I played him Ngibonani. He wrote for the song the next day and came to my place and we got into the studio.

“After a month or so I sent it to Professor, he added texture and feel to the song, taking it to another level and I had a complete project.”
Zulu said the song was the lead track on his album, Premium African Music Volume 1, coming out next year. Zulu concluded that the track was available on all music streaming platforms.
