Black Jaguars has big plans for local youngsters

RIVERSIDE VIEW – Mlambo said the team is currently using a small open space in the yard of their residence to train for their matches.

A newly formed netball club based in Riverside View has appealed to corporates and local authorities to help them with netball kits and a proper netball goal post.

Following government’s decision to put the country under lockdown Level 2 in August last year, Samukelisiwe Mlambo (17) and Patricia Marutha (19) decided to form a netball club in order to keep youngsters away from the streets. Thus, they created the Black Jaguars. Mlambo said, “We realised that many young people had nothing to do during their school days off and they were just roaming the streets. We decided to invite them to come and join our newly formed netball team in order to keep them busy.

“The team does not only offer our peers a chance to play netball but we also help each other with schoolwork. We have recently added activities like dance and music for those who don’t like to play in the field.” Mlambo said the team is currently using a small open space in the yard of their residence to train for their matches.

“Our players are currently using their own black tights and white T-shirts as kits. We have big plans in the pipeline to turn this team into something that will help prevent young people from spending their time with wrong stuff, but we don’t have proper facilities and resources. “We appeal to business people and community leaders to help us realise this dream. If we get better kits, goal posts and a proper facility, we will manage to take more youth off the streets.”
