City of Johannesburg launches iThemba 24-hour crisis line

JOBURG – The crisis line will assist with safety, security, mental health and access to justice for victims of substance abuse and gender-based violence.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, councillor Geoffrey Makhubo launched the City’s iThemba 24-hour substance abuse and gender-based violence crisis line on Friday, 14 August. This is part of the City’s Women’s Month programme, which aims to address gender-based violence and femicide.

The crisis line will aid the City’s response in terms of providing support and linkage to social support services. It will also assist with safety, security, mental health and access to justice for victims of substance abuse and gender-based violence.

Speaking at the launch, Makhubo said the services offered by the iThemba crisis line include emotional support, crisis intervention, tele-counselling, containment of feelings and situation, 24-hour access to professional help and network of support services
