Olifantsfontein artist hopes to stretch out his wings

OLIFANTSFONTEIN – A local artist hopes to take his career to the top with a newly released EP.

Colbert Mabasa released his second, eight-track EP titled Echoed Notes earlier this year.

The 28-year-old Mabasa was born and raised in Tembisa and later moved to Olifantsfontein. He fell in love with music while he was at Mvelaphanda Primary School and graduated from Ikusasa Comprehensive School in 2009. In 2011, he decided to focus on music after he dropped out of university due to financial difficulties.

During his music journey he struggled a lot with funding and finding recording deals. While trying to decide on a specific genre, he explored the multi-genre route. He was inspired by artists like Chris Brown and his main focus became RnB.

Mabasa said his mission is to change people’s lives and give them hope, “My music is about my life struggles because I believe that my stories and the pain I faced can be an inspiration in someone’s life. Besides that I also want people to have fun because music is meant to provide amusement and relaxation.”

His plans for the future include having a standing record label that will give other artists a chance to tell their stories. He aims to continue learning and exploring the music industry as it comes with new content every time. “My goal for this year is to have more of my videos on TV because the music industry changes all the time, I want to stretch out my wings to other provinces and grow my brand as an artist. Lastly, I want to grow more in the business side of the music and develop more connections in the process.”
