Rand Show 2019: Celebrating the elderly

The Rand Show is known for its family fun, out of this world entertainment, music, food, shopping and general festive fare. Yet giving back to the community plays a massive role in all that they do.

At #joburgsbestdayout they have been celebrating an initiative extremely close to their hearts since it was started in 2009 by Craig Newman, CEO of the Johannesburg Expo Centre.  Letsema La Bana, in conjunction with the Rand Show,  is an event hosted during the show to celebrate the selfless work done by the SAPS, and to honour those families that have lost a parent or partner in their heroic efforts to fight crime in our country. Letsema Le Bana means joining hands for the children, which is extremely relevant says Craig Newman. “This event resonates perfectly with the Rand Show, as we are all about family – The initiative was started in the spirit of Ubuntu, and it is with great pride that we watch it grow from strength to strength with every passing year.”

To celebrate 125 years of Rand Show magic, special guests at the 2019 Letsema La Bana festivities include 125 Mkhulu’s and Gogo’s from six of Orlando’s longest standing senior citizens clubs. These selfless seniors have joined forces to provide after care story-telling classes for the learners from AB Xuma Primary School. Hazel Tlhabanyane, of the SABC foundation, one of the Rand Show’s CSI beneficiary’s, has facilitated the morning out for the very excited senior citizens. “These ladies did not give a single thought of what’s in it for me when they started the aftercare reading initiative”, says Hazel, “they have rather asked what’s in it for their communities, and that is why we celebrate them today – for their selfless commitment to the children that they look after.”

The senior citizens are being treated to a full-on VIP experience at the Rand Show and excitement levels are at an all-time high. With so much to see and do at #joburgsbestdayout, these special guests are sure to enjoy the celebration and pampering on their well-deserved day out with some of Joburg’s finest entertainment.

Aside from the senior citizens that are being hosted, they are also hosting 125 SAPS Letsema La Bana visitors and 125 CHOC family beneficiaries, so all in all they are giving those who are so full of heart an all-access pass to #joburgsbestdayout!
