Group Editor’s note: Time to reflect back on the year that has been 2018
JOBURG NORTH – We have taken some time to mull over our own memories from the past year.
Mince pies, carols and school’s out… Yep, the holiday season is upon us, and what a race to the finish line it has been.
The roads in our northern suburbs may be quieter but the news continues to pour in – which is quintessentially symbolic of the year gone by.
It’s also a time for reflection and so, in this final edition for the year, we have stolen a moment for some key community members to share their 2018 experiences.
We here at Caxton Local Media’s Joburg North Branch have also mulled over our memories. One of our key drives this year was to help to make a difference in our communities’ lives, under the banner of Caxton Cares. Throughout the year we have been showcasing these initiatives and we proudly recall some of them here.
Think back to when we introduced school girls to how our newsroom operates as part of the Take a girl child to work day initiative. Then, remember when our team lent a hand at the Caxton Golf Challenge in honour of public benefit organisation Flying For Life. We spent Mandela Day at Ark Animal Centre in Chartwell and our jaws dropped to see how our readers answered our calls for donations. In association with SPAR, we called on sports enthusiasts to donate their unwanted running shoes to the Drop a pair and show you care initiative for underprivileged children in our northern suburbs.
This December, our branch collected Christmas boxes that the charity organisation One Small Act of Kindness will distribute to elderly residents in need.
We have taken bold steps to achieve our aim to lend a helping hand in our communities and next year, we hope to multiply our efforts and continue to inspire our readers to do the same. It brings to mind social activist Howard Zinn’s quote, ‘Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world’. We’ll start small and think big.
It’s some food for thought, especially during this season of giving and, in the spirit of the season, we wish our readers a happy holiday and all the best for the New Year.
