A love affair of laughs

MIDRAND – Lindi describes Morake as a long-time friend he always shares laughs with.

Midrand resident and comedian Ndumiso Lindi never thought that a simple question by a customs official could lead to a successful show with renowned comedian and actress Tumi Morake.

They were on their way back to South Africa after performing in London when a customs official asked them, “Are you married?” Lindi’s answer was, “Yes, but not to each other.” That was the birth of their current hot-selling performance titled, Married but not to each other.

Lindi, originally from the Eastern Cape, has been living in Midrand for the past seven years. He described Morake as a long-time friend he always shares laughs with. The duo has already performed the show in Cape Town and Pretoria and on both occasions it was sold out. “We thought it was a good title and we started working on the structure of the piece,” he said.

Married but not to each other speaks about marriage, relationships in general and their challenges. “Anyone can relate to it. We have decided to move away from the regular topics that have been used by many comedians before and we wanted to challenge ourselves to do something different.”

He explained how the comedy touches on the dynamics of being in a relationship. “Sometimes people go through issues in relationships and think that they are the only ones. Only to find that the problems are the same. It is nice to see people laugh about it. We have received positive feedback from the previous shows that we have done. People are loving it.”

They are performing in Johannesburg on 14 April at the Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City. He said he always had a love for comedy but got hooked in 2004 and decided to do it full-time.

He said working with Morake is always accompanied by positive vibes and laughter. Lindi advised aspiring comedians to remain true to themselves. “One would have to be extra special. Join the industry because you really want to work in it not because you want to be like someone else. Be yourself, always.”

Tickets start at R160 and are available at Computicket or at the Lyric Box Office on 011 248 5000 or www.goldreefcity.co.za. The show carries a PG16 age restriction. It starts at 8.30pm and doors open at 8pm.
