Feeding hungry children is a must in Rabie Ridge and Tembisa

MIDRAND – Food For Life aims to grow the number of organisations they reach, to feed more people in need.

Food For Life (FFL) Midrand aims to eliminate hunger in Midrand. The local food relief network is growing and now serves up to 2 100 plates per month to the needy.

Chairperson Vinesh Maharaj said the organisation has expanded its reach and now has a school programme at Elizabeth’s Nest based in Rabie Ridge, Tembisa; as well other programmes it facilitates when possible.

Every Friday, the organisation serves 300 plates of food at Elizabeth’s Nest founded by Elizabeth Mthimunye. “She is a loving and well-organised person who believes that no child should go to school or come back from school with an empty tummy,” said Maharaj.

Regular beneficiaries are Tumelo Home for the Mentally Handicapped, Thuthukani Centre and the New Jerusalem Children’s Home based in Ivory Park and President Park.

Maharaj says the success of Food For Life Midrand is possible due to the dedication of its volunteers who commit two hours of their time each month to not just feeding the children but, more importantly, sharing their love and time.

Food for Life makes a difference at Thuthukani Centre with food donations.

Maharaj reiterated some of former president Nelson Mandela’s quotes: “Let us reach out to the children. Let us do whatever we can to support their fight to rise above their pain and suffering. What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Volunteers can meet the FFL team, who will be stationed at the corner of Le Roux Rd and Smuts Drive, in Midrand, at 11.15 am on 30 July.
