The Back to the City festival is back for its eleventh year and will be held in Newtown Mary Fitzgerald Square and will host various hip-hop artists on Freedom Day.
The festival gives a platform to new hip-hop artists and thousands of fans flock to Newtown annually to catch a glimpse of their favourite performers on 27 April. The festival attracts big names such as HHP, Reason, Kwesta, Proverb, Chad Da Don, Pro, Fifi Cooper and even international acts such as Elzhi from Chicago and Skyzoo from New York. Last year Nasty C delighted his fans when he made a surprise appearance on the evening.

With 80 artists performing every year, there will be some newer faces on the scene and all aspects of the hip hop culture will be on display including DJing, graffiti, emceeing, beatboxing and skateboarding. This year fans can expect big international names – the likes of Apollo Brown and Skyzoo – who will travel all the way from the United States of America straight to Newtown.
Founder of the festival, Osmic Menoe, said that the festival was not just offering artists a platform to showcase their talent but also as a way to propel the genre forward. “When I started the festival I ran it out of my own pocket but as the festival grew it attracted sponsors and with 3 500 people at the first event I saw the festival becoming much bigger and hence 11 years later we are still growing bigger and better,” Menoe said.
