To Berlin and back to Joburg with great music

JOBURG – Abroad and back, Alice Phoebe Lou makes her debut on home soil.

Alice Phoebe Lou set out with no money or support and a big dream in her heart – and she’s well on her way to achieving it.

This young and ambitious songstress took a daring jump into the unknown as she set off from Cape Town to a foreign country, without money or a job, in pursuit of her ultimate goal.

“I started playing music properly on the streets of Berlin when I was travelling through Europe and it just clicked with me. I love being able to play on the street where your concert is accessible to anyone and where you are bringing a vibrant atmosphere to the streets,” Lou explained.

She developed her bluesy, folk sound busking on the streets of Berlin and quickly caught the ears of a community of music lovers the world over with her voice. Later she was invited to perform at TEDx Berlin – a performance which went viral and received almost half a million views.

Now five years in Berlin, Lou has accomplished a number of amazing feats in the international music industry. She released her debut album, Orbit, during her five years abroad and even managed to snag a six-page spread in Germany’s Rolling Stone magazine. “It felt like a huge accomplishment. I couldn’t really believe it.”

This year, the jet-setter will return home to perform in three South African shows, with one in Johannesburg at the popular Goodluck Bar.
“I’m so looking forward to my first headlining gig in Joburg. Bongeziwe Mabandla and Kajama are incredible artists to be sharing a stage with.”
Referring to the response she has received from her South African audiences, Lou said, “It feels like it’s been a good reception. I always have a great time playing shows in South Africa.”
