Join Gangs of Ballet on their musical journey

JOBURG - Two marriages, tours and a new EP for Gangs of Ballet.

Gangs of Ballet is the exciting trio of local musicians who took the world by storm a few years ago with their alternative music.
Just one year ago, the famed alternative electronic band released the EP (a short album) Form and Function, which was met with much celebration from their fans and now, a year later, two of the band’s members have been married and their new EP Form and Function Part 2 is officially out.
“For this one, we wanted to do something different so we thought let’s release three EPs and we’ll put them under an umbrella [Form and Function] album,” Josh Klynsmith explained.
“The reason we wanted to do that is because when you’re doing an album, you write a bunch of songs and you pick 12 that live together as a project. By the time you have an album, you can get about four singles out of that, but by the fourth single, music has moved.
“Then you have a bunch of old songs that you want to release into a new market. So we thought that we’d rather find a way to keep writing and keep releasing things on trend and where we are at musically in life, so we thought let’s do it this way and by the end of it, we’ll have a journey of where we’ve been in this time.”
This EP, as Brad Kynsmith explained, was self-produced in their hometown, Durban, and has a different sound to the first part and feels a lot lighter and fun than the first one.
“The sound choices are a little bit different. The sound is even a bit 80s,” he said.
Form and Function Part 2, which is now available on iTunes, is the band’s musical journey so far and they urge fans to join them on their path as they delve deeper into their unique brand of music.
