Gigi Lamayne aims for gold

Multiple award-winning hip-hop artist, Genesis Manney, popularly known as Gigi Lamayne, released her much-anticipated debut album, iGenesis.

The 21-year-old has been one of the leading female rappers in the hip-hop genre having performed at events such as Maftown Heights and Back to the City.

Manney said the album reflected on various stages of her life, both good and bad, and various challenges she had to overcome to get where she is today. “The album is very diverse, it is very different and it is guaranteed there is a song everyone would like,” she said.

“With the album people will see that I was trying to diversify as much as possible.”

The album features various music heavyweights such as award-winning motswako rapper Khuli Chana, Proverb, Zintle Ngidi and upcoming hip-hop star Kid Tini.

Hot on the heels of releasing a mixtape earlier this year which had top charting singles such as Shisa and Moja, Manney has set her sights on becoming the first female artist to have an album go gold (selling 1 500 copies).

“Never has a female musician in Africa hit gold and we got the opportunity to do that first, before anyone in Nigeria, DRC or any other country does it,” she expressed.

The Ice-Cream hitmaker recently signed with Mabala Noise Entertainment and said the move has helped her a lot as a musician.

“I needed people that were going to help me with everything [to do with] business, music, and finding opportunities for me. So the move to Mabala has enhanced my growth as an artist,” she said.

She has also recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in media and anthropology – and earned four distinctions.
