The Undercover Hero comes to surface

FOURWAYS – The Undercover Hero talks about his time on stage… so far.

There’s a signature voice taking over the music scene and dominating market gigs.

Gavin Wilson, known as The Undercover Hero to his fans, is the new face on the music scene. The Port Elizabeth native relocated to Johannesburg more than 14 years ago and decided – ever since he was in school – that music is what he would pursue.

He developed a love for music at the age of 17 after he became part of a music group and learned to master the strings of a guitar. “In Grade 6, I used to play in my school band, and then I picked up a guitar and I just haven’t stopped playing since,” he said, smiling.

The North Riding resident spoke to City Buzz at the Fourways Farmer’s Market – one of the Joburg north hotspots where he gigs. It’s clear that this is not the singer and instrumentalist’s first time on stage, as growing his music means he has been gigging across the city to get himself out there.

“I started playing in the line-ups at Farmer’s Market and I’m actually coming into my own now and writing my new material. I get shows that I perform with Sean Hayz [part of the band, Motherland] at Social on Main and I arrange my own shows and line-ups in the Northgate vicinity,” he explained.

Getting his music out there is not all that he’s doing right now, as he is also setting plans in motion to form a band that will become known as The Undercover Heroes. Already set with a drummer and bass guitarist from other bands that have been in the music industry previously, The Undercover Heroes is coming together and ready to attack the market with some original rock-folk music of their own.

“We aim to go straight into a studio with one, two or three original songs,” he said.

While he and his band are not yet signed to a record label, it’s clear to see that this undercover hero is determined to manifest his musical aspirations.
