Waking up for a 6am inner city Instameet is a fun and interesting way to start your weekend – and it’s the next big thing.
On 11 June, the #BankCitySunrise Instameet kicked off at FNB Bank City in the chilly Johannesburg CBD at 6.30am.
With Instagram being one of the most popular photo sharing social media applications available on every Smartphone today, a certain fixation on photography and taking the perfect photo has come about – hence, the Instameet.
Various individuals and groups have been running Instameets or Instawalks in the city – a group activity where an invitation is circulated through the social media platform to invite budding photographers and hipsters to a certain location, from which they will take a journey through the streets of the city with the aim of capturing the perfect moment.
More than 20 young Igers (the name given to people who use Instagram) showed up at the social gathering, eager to catch the morning sunrise and perfectly portray the urban ambiance of the quiet weekend city.
The feeling of numbers bringing safety is one evident among the city Igers who brought their best cameras and equipment, props and even outfit changes to get their perfect pic of the city or someone in it.
The eager Igers started their walk at FNB Bank City, made their way to the corner of Rissik and Kerk streets, walked south to Cramers Coffee – a quaint bistro favoured by the city’s own MzansiGirl blogger – on Main Street and made their way back to the beginning at the corner of Simmonds and Kerk streets; all the while taking in the views of various heritage sites, snapping some pictures, meeting some of the locals and taking in the vibe.
This all sounds like oodles of fun, but in actual fact, it took a significant amount of work for organisers to get photo permissions at various sites and organise free coffee and croissants for Igers, among other things – but it was all worth it.
