TimeWize Parental Control is in the top 10 at HackJozi

MIDRAND – Parental control app devised by Midrand residents makes it into the top 10 at HackJozi.

The app, TimeWize Parental Control, is in the top 10 finalists at the HackJozi Challenge 2016.

HackJozi is an initiative by the City of Johannesburg, Wits University, The Joburg Centre for Software Engineering and Inquisition South Africa to assist young start-up entrepreneurs in bringing to market their digital technology products that will improve the lives of communities in Johannesburg.

The app, that was developed by Barend Craven and Robyn Howes, allows parents to limit the amount of screen time that their children have on cellphones, tablets and desktops.

Craven said the HackJozi challenge was a boot camp for start-up entrepreneurs and its aim was to contribute towards fostering skills, innovation and entrepreneurship in the broad area of digital technology.

“TimeWize Parental Control entered the HackJozi Challenge with the intent of gaining, as part of the prize, mentorship to bring a full and comprehensive product to our people,” he said.

“We also have a few interesting facets of the TimeWize experience that we would like to incorporate into TimeWize Parental Control to bring a better, all-around experience to the families that have TimeWize in their parenting toolbox.”

Craven added that there were about 450 entrants in the HackJozi Challenge with the top 100 selected to start the mentorship and boot camps.

“The competition went down to 20 finalists who had to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The next boot camp involved the finalists producing a minimum viable product. This product was evaluated throughout the day by mentors from varying backgrounds in the industry. The products were then judged to produce the top 10 finalists.”
