Eytys collaborates with Esther Mahlangu

JOHANNESBURG – Swedish sneaker brand Eytys collaborated with artist Esther Mahlangu to create a colourful new style of sneaker.

Mahlangu was born in the Mpumalanga province in 1935 and is famous for her ability to add traditional Ndebele art to modern subjects. Not only has she exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in France and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, but in 1991, she was the first woman to create a BMW Art Car.

Despite her age, she is still actively painting and teaching art in her native village and around the world. For the Eytys/Mahlangu collaboration, two pairs of Eytys Doja sneakers were embroidered with a bright, bold selection of Mahlangu’s latest artworks and signature style.

To celebrate the project, South African photographer Travys Owen photographed Mahlangu wearing her ‘Doja Mahlangu’ suede sneakers while also wearing her traditional celebratory Ndebele clothing. Although Mahlangu’s photographs were taken in her hometown in Mpumalanga, which falls far from the City Buzz distribution area, Eytys also recently collaborated with a number of Johannesburg designers and photographers for their Spring/Summer 2016 collection, which was shot on the streets on Jozi last month.
