African channels lock lips with Lip Sync Battle

JOBURG - The MTV show Lip Sync Battle comes to Africa, with African celebrities in Africa's best city, Johannesburg.

Viacom-owned youth entertainment channel MTV has produced a local version of Viacom’s global hit entertainment show, Lip Sync Battle Africa.

Recorded in Johannesburg, the weekly show will go live in April, with series 1 comprising 13 half-hour episodes featuring vocal showdowns between top celebrities and entertainment figures, complete with dancers, wigs, costumes, props and tons of swag.

Each battle will consist of two celebrities miming to popular music tracks of their choice. Contestants must lip-sync to two songs – one of which must be by an African artist – and the winner of the battle is chosen by the live studio audience.

The African spin-off will be hosted by two celebrities – following in the footsteps of the US series version starring LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen – the names of whom will be announced at a later date.

Having spread to a number of locations around the globe, Lip Sync Battle is officially one of the most infectious formats ever to come out of the Viacom stable with nine signed local production deals in the UK, China, Chile, Canada, Indonesia, Philippines, Norway, Poland and Vietnam.

“We are thrilled to partner with e.tv on localising Lip Sync Battle for an African audience with its amazing energy and authentic charm that has celebrities lining up to take part and viewers clamouring for more,” Dillon Khan, head of MTV Africa, said.

Monde Twala, managing director at e.tv Channels Division said, “We are extremely excited about this groundbreaking partnership. Lip Sync Battle Africa is a fresh and entertaining format, it’s an extension of e.tv’s goal to bring the viewers fresh homegrown content with a special twist.”

The first episode of the localised show will air on MTV and MTV Base in April, before making its debut on e.tv.

Don’t miss out on the proudly South African small screen singing action.
