Saftas nominees announced
JOBURG – After sifting through 468 entries, the National Film and Video Foundation finally announced the nominees for the 10th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas), at a star-studded breakfast at Montecasino.
The Saftas also launched its new look and dream-inspired theme, Imagine. Zama Mkosi, CEO of the foundation said, “We consider ourselves the backbone of the Saftas, and the decision to imbue a new sense of progress and meaning to the identity affords us another opportunity to demonstrate our support.
“As we celebrate a decade of the Saftas, it was a fitting time to redefine the event and all the elements that make it a noteworthy annual gathering.”
Mkosi explained that the Saftas were not a popularity contest but rather a platform to honour excellence across the industry.
Notable nominees included ZA News: Puppet Nation which received 11 nominations including Best TV Comedy; Aggrey Loake and Nik Rabinowitz for Best Achievement by a Lead Actor in a TV comedy; and one for Alex Fynn for Best Achievement in Directing (TV comedy).
Garnering nine nominations were Those Who Can’t for Best TV Comedy; Chantal Herman and Robyn Scott for Best Achievement by a Lead Actress in a TV Comedy; Zee Ntuli and Daniel Zimbler for Best Achievement in Directing (TV comedy); and Brendan Barnes for Best Achievement in Cinematography (TV comedy).
Impressing with eight nominations was RISE and Ingoma for Best Achievement in Directing (Movies made for TV); Best Achievement in Art/Production Design (Movies made for TV); Best Achievement in Scriptwriting (Movies made for TV) and Ingoma vying for Best Made for TV Movie.
Also with eight nominations was Kota Life Crisis for Best TV Comedy; Bongani Madondo for Best Achievement by Supporting Actor in a TV comedy; Vatiswa Ndara for Best Achievement by a Lead Actress in a TV comedy; Tumi Morake for Best Achievement by a Supporting Actress in a TV comedy, Best Achievement in Scriptwriting (TV comedy) and Best Achievement in Cinematography (TV comedy) among others.
This year saw a 60 percent increase in entries, a positive indication that the industry is not only growing in size but also how craft and finesse are now critical to the delivery of world-class film and television productions.
The winners will be revealed on 18 and 20 March.
