Today is Margarita Day… Salud!

Here's a classic margarita recipe and one with a watermelon twist.

The margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila, orange liqueur and freshly squeezed lime juice, often served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is served shaken with ice.

While the Margarita is one of the most popular cocktails, its origins are shrouded in mystery. There are almost as many stories about who invented the margarita as there are margarita recipes. Some like them blended, others with a sweetener, but many say the best margarita recipe is this classic one.

Classic Margarita

3 parts tequila

2 parts cointreau, triple sec or another orange liqueur

2 parts freshly squeezed lime juice

Salt

Add the ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice.

Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass filled with fresh ice.

Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.

For a slightly sweeter drink, add a dash of agave syrup (one part water, two parts agave nectar) before shaking.
