Young star creates new KhoiSound

IVORY PARK- A young artist from Ivory Park, Vuyolwethu Gxe, is taking the sound of the Khoisan, the original people of southern Africa, to his peers.

The young up-and-coming hip-hop artist said he wanted to infuse a mixture of music which celebrated South Africa’s heritage together with the current South African reality and entertain people while doing so.

Gxe, an 18-year-old Rabie Ridge resident who is in matric, has big dreams. “On 6 February, I held a listening session at BLAKcomunnity studios in Ivory Park,” Gxe said.

Gxe said the aim of the listening session was to bring the sound that he created to life for many of his peers who were not familiar with it.

He aptly calls it the ‘KhoiSound’ and, “It was also meant to create a strong and loyal fanbase.”

In a world where social media is king, the importance of social networks are not lost on this millennial. “I invite everyone to follow me on Twitter, Facebook and listen to my track on Soundcloud. I even invited bloggers to my session,” said Gxe.

His music aspirations have not deterred him from getting an education. “Before the listening session on Saturday, I went to school on Friday and studied the whole day so that I could be free the following day.”

After the listening session, Gxe went to VOT FM, Ivory Park’s local radio station, where he spoke about his music. He said the day was one which he had prepared for and hoped that it launched him as an artist.

“I appreciate everyone who supported me. The venue was dope [slang for excellent], KraftCreative helped me with videos and pictures and my good friend Thando ‘CTeeDopeBoy’ Simelane helped with the organisation.”
